As a reviewer, I had the opportunity to test out the TreatLife Smart Switches in my own home. If you’re trying to decide between a smart light or switch for your bedroom, I would suggest that smart lights are better for renters or rooms with few lights, while smart switches are better suited for homeowners and rooms with lots of lights. However, if you’re in the market for a smart switch, I highly recommend giving the TreatLife Smart Switches a closer look.

What are TreatLife switches?

TreatLife is a company that makes smart plugs, LED bulbs, and switches that can be controlled by an app or your voice. These products use a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection to work. However, if your current light switches don’t have a neutral wire, TreatLife switches won’t work in your home.

I tested three TreatLife Switches – the Light & Ceiling Fan Dimmer Switch, the Smart Light Switch, and the Smart Dimmer Switch. They have a nice design that is easy to use. These switches can be used as either a single pole or 3-way to control your lights. For 3-way switches, you don’t need to buy another smart switch from the same company, which can save you money. But it can be hard to figure out where to install the switch at the input end of the 3-way line, which is the first switch in the circuit. I recommend following TreatLife’s instructions to make this part of the installation easier.

TreatLife switches work with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, and you can set schedules and connect with multiple switches for a scene, which is great for entertaining or creating the right ambiance.

How to install a TreatLife smart switch?

Installing TreatLife switches is a pretty straightforward process. It’s actually quite similar to other smart switches I’ve tested. However, it’s important to make sure that the wiring in the switch you’re replacing is appropriate and that there is enough space in the outlet box to fit the new switch and its four wires. This can be a big problem with smart switches. Sometimes, even if the wiring has been updated in older homes, the outlet boxes can be too small to accommodate the size of the smart switch and its additional wires. The new smart switches are deeper than regular switches and require more room to connect the four wires with wire nuts. These four wires are Line/Load, Traveler, Neutral, and Ground.

If there’s not enough room for all the wires, wire nuts, and switch, there’s a risk that the wires will disconnect and cause the light to not work properly, and possibly even cause a fire. So, before installing any smart switch, I recommend checking the size of your junction box first.

Once you confirm that you have the correct wiring and there is enough space for TreatLife switches, turn off the power and remove the old switch from the outlet. But don’t disconnect the wires before taking a quick picture of the existing wiring on the current switch. If you want, you can use the stickers provided by TreatLife to label the wires. This makes it easier to connect the TreatLife switch later on. Then, remove the old switch and connect the house wires to your TreatLife switch. Make sure to secure the wires with the supplied wire nuts, and only then turn the power back on.

Overall, the installation process should take about 20 to 25 minutes depending on your level of comfort with electrical work. For installation, I recommend using the TreatLife app, which is available for both iOS and Android devices from the App Store and Google Play.

How to integrate TreatLife smart switches into your smart ecosystem?

Once I had successfully installed the TreatLife switches, I was ready to set up hands-free control using Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. To do this, I had to first pair my switches with the respective voice assistants by going to the Alexa and Google Home apps on my mobile device. It’s important to use the same name for the device that I used in the TreatLife app to avoid confusion.

TreatLife initially used the Smart Life app by Tuya to pair their devices with Alexa and Google Assistant. However, they now use their own app to connect with Amazon Alexa. For Google Assistant, they use a combination of the Smart Life app and their own app. To pair my switches with Google Assistant-enabled devices, I had to look for Smart Life, not TreatLife, and link that account with my TreatLife account. I found this process to be a bit complicated, but there are directions in the TreatLife app to help with the pairing process. I did ask the company about this, and they said they are working to streamline the process.

How expensive is it to convert your smart home switches to TreatLife?

Spoiler alert, it’s not expensive! When looking to buy a reliable smart switch, it is important to keep in mind that the cost can range from $25 to $60. Some brands, like Lutron, require you to connect the switch to a separate hub which can increase the cost of the switch. However, TreatLife offers packages that can reduce the cost per switch. For example, they have four-packs of the Wi-Fi Dimmer Switch for $80 and the 3-Way Smart Light Switch  for $55. This brings the cost of the Dimmer Switch to around $20 and the Smart Light Switch to $18 each. The only expensive switch offered by TreatLife is the Smart Ceiling Fan Control and Light Dimmer Switch, which costs $50 but does not require a hub and is a great way to combine lights and fan into one switch. You can purchase these switches on Amazon and other major retailers.

Should I buy TreatLife smart switches?

I have tested the TreatLife switches in my home for months and they are working great. Even when installed upstairs, they connected to my router on the floor below. However, I did face some issues. Pairing the switches with Google Assistant was more difficult than with Alexa. The Google Home app didn’t offer TreatLife as an option to pair with the Google Assistant, which made the process challenging. This is something to consider if you use Google Assistant devices.

One thing that disappointed me was the lack of smart home integrations. I would like to see more options like smart home security systems, including both professionally or DIY-installed, integrate with these switches. Direct integration with smart cameras and video doorbells would also be helpful, so that lights turn on when someone is at your door or motion is detected. That said, they have introduced a lot of new integrations over the past year and work wonderfully with my door and motion sensors.

If you need smart switches that are full of value and easy to install, look no further. These switches are my go-to solution in my own home. If you don’t have a neutral wire in your electrical boxes, I will be covering my favorite solution for this in another article.
