One of my favorite and affordable smart home ecosystems is Aqara. It is a smart home system that relies on a technology called Zigbee. It works by connecting battery-powered sensors and gadgets to a central hub, which then integrates with voice-controlled smart assistants like Alexa, HomeKit, and Google Assistant. This way, users can control their smart home devices with their voice without having to touch anything. This technology also requires less power usage, which means that there are more possibilities and uses for its gadgets.

Aqara has an app, but it has some flaws. The app can be confusing and challenging to use. Therefore, I don’t recommend using it. However, the hardware used in Aqara is top-notch, following Xiaomi’s ethos of providing devices with high-quality specs and hardware at a reasonable price.

So, Aqara is an excellent choice for people who want to make their homes smart. The central hub connects all the devices in your home, and the voice-controlled assistant makes controlling them easy. Although the app has some shortcomings, the hardware used is of excellent quality, making Aqara an affordable yet high-performing option for smart homes.

They’re simple, durable, and made in white so they blend into your home’s décor. They’re not flashy or showy, but they get the job done. Setting them up is also easy, and they come at a very affordable price. You can get a contact sensor for just $17, or an in-wall smart switch for $45 – these are good deals for good hardware!

Aqara’s devices work with Zigbee 3.0 hubs and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. You can connect them to Alexa, Google, and Apple HomeKit, and both hubs have a speaker that doubles as a siren. If you want to set up your Aqara system as a self-monitored alarm, this is a useful feature. I personally use this feature to dual as my home security system.

The two hubs, M1S and M2, have some differences. The M1S plugs into an outlet and takes up two spots, while the M2 is more like a traditional hub powered by a USB cable. It can also be hardwired with an ethernet cable for better reliability. The M2 also has an IR transmitter built-in, which lets you use it as a replacement for any IR remote you may have for a TV, fan, or game console.

On the other hand, the M1S has an LED light ring that changes color in different alarm modes and can act as a color-changing nightlight. Both hubs are great options, depending on your needs.

We found it more convenient to tuck the Aqara hub away in a cupboard and plug it into an extension cord with USB ports. This way, it doesn’t take up an entire outlet in our home, like the M1S does. It’s a simple solution that keeps our space tidy and organized while still allowing us to enjoy the benefits of a smart home system.

Overall, Aqara’s smart home devices are a great way to make your home smarter without breaking the bank. They offer affordable, functional, and easy-to-use solutions for automating your home and making it more convenient. If you’re interested in adding Aqara to your smart home, they offer several packages to help save money while getting started.
